Major Herring joined the Marine Corps in May 1989 and graduated from MCRD San Diego, California in August 1989, and was meritoriously promoted to Private First Class upon graduation.

After graduation, he attended MOS School at Millington, Tennessee as a CH-53 A/D Helicopter Mechanic (6113), and was meritoriously promoted to Lance Corporal. He received orders to HMH-462, MAG-16, 3d MAW, Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Tustin, California, as a flight line mechanic and later transitioning to the CH-53E. In December 1992, Sergeant Herring transferred to HMH-363 in order to deploy in support of Operation Restore Hope in Somalia.

He graduated from National University, Irvine, California in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. He then completed Officer Candidate School and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in December 1996.

Upon completion of The Basic School in July 1997, Second Lieutenant Herring attended the Aviation Supply Officer Course in Athens, Georgia. After graduation, he reported to MALS- 16, MAG-16, 3d MAW, MCAS Tustin, California for duty.

After returning from deployment in June 1999 as the Aviation Supply Officer (ASO) with HMM-364 (Rein), 13th MEU (SOC), on the USS Boxer LDH-4, he then served as the Navy and Marine Corps Flying Hour Program Manager at CNAF, North Island, California.

In June 2002, Capt Herring reported to MALS-16, MAG-16, 3d MAW, MCAS Miramar, California for duty as the Assistant Aviation Supply Officer, and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) in January 2003. Upon returning from deployment, he took charge of the MALS Supply Department as the ASO.

He was then accepted to the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, California, in June 2005. He graduated in December 2006 with a Master in Business Administration, with a focus in Contracting and Acquisitions. Major Herring reported to the Regional Contracting Office, MCI-West, Camp Pendleton, California for duty. In January 2008 he deployed to Fallujah, Iraq in support of Operation Iraq Freedom with I Marine Expeditionary Force as the MNF-West Contingency Contracting Officer.

In Aug 2010, he was transferred to MALS-13, MAG-13, 3d MAW to assume his duties as the MALS Executive Officer.

Major Herring's personal awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with three gold stars, and Combat Action Ribbon.
