Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate

Computer Science and Mathematics Division

The Computer Science and Mathematics Division (CSMD) is ORNL's premier source of basic and applied research in high-performance computing, applied mathematics, and intelligent systems. Our mission includes basic research in computational sciences and application of advanced computing systems, computational, mathematical and analysis techniques to the solution of scientific problems of national importance. We seek to work collaboratively with universities to enhance science education and progress in the computational sciences. CSMD seeks to maintain our position as the premier computational science research location among DOE laboratories and to become the premier location worldwide where outstanding scientists, computer scientists and mathematicians can perform interdisciplinary computational research.

CSMD has “core” funded programs in applied math, computer science, and networking through the Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research (OASCR). The division is also strategically aligned with the DOE Office of Science’s Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC) program. This ~$66M/yr program started in 2001 and seeks to develop new tools and techniques for advancing scientific research through computational modeling and simulation in all mission areas of the Department of Energy’s Office of Science. The SciDAC program was created to accelerate scientific discovery not only within the DOE Office of Science research community, but also among scientific communities across the country and around the world. CSMD Staff lead or are actively engaged in many SciDAC projects and have demonstrated that important scientific accomplishments are possible through simulation and modeling with the focused collaboration and active partnership of domain scientists, applied mathematicians, and computer scientists. The scientific computing infrastructure being developed under SciDAC enables researchers to exploit the ever-increasing capabilities of supercomputers to study some of the most challenging scientific problems. CSMD has seven groups that map directly into this program. The Computer Science Research , Computational Mathematics, and Statistics and Data Science groups comprise computer scientists and applied mathematicians that collaborate with the application scientists in the Computational Materials Science, Computational Chemical Sciences, Computational Earth Sciences and Computational Astrophysics groups. In addition, the Future Technologies group evaluates hardware and software systems using both traditional benchmark applications as well as performance models in order to help both the application scientist and vendor prepare for next generation computational challenges. The Complex Systems group enables science and unconventional technologies in support of the DOD and the Intelligence Community. Finally, the division's Teragrid project provides hardware, software and people support for high bandwidth connectivity to the NSF’s cyberinfrastructure.
