Disturbance Summaries
Geomagnetic storms are relatively rapid variations of the magnetic field surrounding the Earth. These fluctuations are caused by particles and fields that emanate from the Sun and impact the Earth’s magnetosphere. The ground-level effect of these disturbances can result in deviations in compasses and GPS navigation, and systems which rely on the magnetic field for orientation, as well as create problems for satellites, airlines, oil pipelines, bulk electric power systems and other electrically-conducting ground-level infrastructure.
