About White River Junction, VT VAMC
The White River Junction VA Medical Center (VAMC) is responsible for delivery of health care to eligible veterans in Vermont and 4 neighboring counties in New Hampshire. Those services are delivered at our main campus at WRJ and in our four Community Based Outpatient Clinics in Bennington, Rutland, and Colchester VT and Littleton, NH. The WRJ VA is closely affiliated with Dartmouth Medical School (DMS) and multiple other nursing and allied health affiliations. The White River Junction (WRJ) VA Medical Center is located on 64 acres of hillside in the Upper Connecticut River Valley. Our facility includes a hospital building, a 47,000 square foot research building, an ambulatory care building and buildings for clinical and administrative support. The hospital's bi-state catchment area includes 94,000 veterans (64,000 in Vermont and 30,000 in New Hampshire). The Medical Center is a 60-bed, acute care facility that provides a full range of primary, secondary, and specialty care. Clinical services focus on a comprehensive, compassionate continuity of care. In addition, four state-of-the-art Operating Room Suites, and six Post Anesthesia Recovery beds support WRJ's active surgery program. The facility operates a VA Mobile Health Coach that serves as a VA New England Healthcare System resource for stand-downs and outreach activities and as backup for the Department of Defense during national emergencies. Medical School Affiliations: The White River Junction VAMC is dually affiliated with Dartmouth Medical School (DMS), the fourth oldest medical school in the nation and University of Vermont (UVM) College of Medicine. White River Junction VAMC signed a formal affiliation with DMS in 1975, however, an informal affiliation was in effect since 1946. The affiliation supports more than 150 individuals in 17 specialties. Forty percent of the clinical medicine activity for DMS students takes place at the VA and these students rank the VA superior to their non-VA training options. Our high quality supervision of medical graduate and post-graduate trainees helps to assure patient safety and is identified as a national best practice. Our Chief of staff is an Associate Dean and a member the VISN 1 Academic Advisory Board. All permanent VA staff physicians at White River Junction must qualify for DMS faculty appointment. This affiliation has also provided the substrate to support the National Center for PTSD, the National Quality Scholars Program, a field station in Patient Safety, VA Outcomes Group, a Rural Health Initiative, a VA Research and Development Service and a new Inter Professional Patient Safety Fellowship. White River Junction VAMC has supported a formal affiliation with the University of Vermont (UVM) College of Medicine, Burlington, Vermont since 1994. This affiliation provides the mechanism for medical residents, cardiology and psychiatry fellows and students to rotate through our Fort Ethan Allen Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) in Colchester, Vermont. This CBOC also supports UVM trainees in advance nurse practice, and social work. Allied Health Affiliations: White River Junction VAMC maintains over 40 other current academic affiliations with area colleges and vocational schools, to provide a variety of professional and technical experiences for students in nursing, physician assistants, optometrists, psychologists, physical and occupational therapy, social work, radiology, medical technology, and other fields. The VA Office of Academic Affiliations provides stipend support for those enrolled in optometry, psychology and social work programs. White River Junction maintains nursing affiliations with the following schools: These programs include didactic and clinical training toward attainment of the Licensed Practical Nurse, Registered Nurse/Baccalaureate of Science and Nursing, and Nurse Practitioner levels of nursing.
