Battle Creek VA Medical Center

Visitor Information

Locations

The Battle Creek VA Medical Center serves Veterans from a 22-county area in west Michigan.  In addition to our main facility in Battle Creek, we offer a number of services to our patients at four Community Based Outpatient Clinics, located in Benton Harbor, Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Muskegon, Michigan.

Hours of Operation/Visiting Hours/Visitation Rights

Administrative hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for the Battle Creek, Benton Harbor, Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Muskegon facilities.  The Admissions area in Building 2 at the Battle Creek VA Medical Center is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Visiting hours are daily from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.  Children under the age of 10 are not permitted on the inpatient wards, excluding Residential Care and Community Living Center units, without the written consent of the ward physician or POD/MOD.  Relatives and friends may be permitted to visit a seriously ill patient other than normal visiting hours.

Visiting hours for patients on psychiatric wards are from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.  Visiting will take place in the room/space designated for visiting.  Visiting hours may be unlimited for seriously ill patients on medical wards and Community Living Center units.  The length of each visit will be at the discretion of the nursing staff, based on the best interest of the patient.

The medical center respects the patient's right to make decisions about his or her care, treatment and services, and to involve  the patient's family in care, treatment, and services decisions to the extent permitted by the patient or surrogate decision-maker.  ‘Family’ is defined as a group of two or more persons united by blood, or adoptive, marital, domestic partnership, or other legal ties.  The family may also be a person or persons not legally related to the individual (such as significant other, friend or caregiver) whom the individual considers to be family.  A family member may be the surrogate decision-maker, as defined in VHA Handbook 1004.02, if authorized to make care decisions for the individual, should he or she lose decision-making capacity or choose to delegate decision making to another.  The medical center allows a family member, friend or other individual to be present with the patient for emotional support during the course of stay.  The medical center allows for the presence of a support individual of the patient's choice, unless the individual's presence infringes on others' rights or safety, or is medically or therapeutically contraindicated.  The individual may or may not be the patient's surrogate decision-maker or legally authorized representative.  The hospital prohibits discrimination based on age, race, ethnicity, religion, culture, language, physical or mental disability, socioeconomic status, sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity or expression.

Waiting Areas

For your convenience and safety, we have special waiting areas throughout the facility.  Please do not gather in the hallways or at the nurses' stations.

We have volunteers who work in the waiting areas at specific times to assist you.  A Volunteer Coffee Room is located on the first floor of Building 2 and coffee is available at no charge while you are waiting for your appointment.

Security

Our Police officers provide 24-hour patrols of the facility and parking lots.  Report all suspicious or criminal activity, vehicle accidents, and personal property losses to the VA Police while on the facility grounds as soon as possible.

Because the VA Medical Center is federal property, all persons and bags are subject to search.  In addition, no weapons, alcohol, or illegal drugs are permitted.
