Remarks for the Fifth Americas Competitiveness Forum Launch Event (en Español)
May 3, 2011
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
As prepared for delivery
His Excellency Vice President Albuquerque, Minister van der Horst, esteemed ministers, distinguished guests, I am pleased to be in Santo Domingo this evening with you to announce the fifth annual Americas Competitiveness Forum.
This is my first visit to the Dominican Republic, and I am very honored to be here.
The United States appreciates greatly the leadership of the Dominican Republic in the organization and hosting of the Forum.
We are especially thankful for the leadership shown by President Fernandez, Vice President Alburquerque, and Minister Andrés van der Horst and the entire ACF host team, and we look forward to making the Fifth annual conference a great success.
I want to thank each of you for coming this evening; I know we have many distinguished business leaders and government officials with us, and I know that each of you cares about the prosperity and well being of the people of the Americas.
I also know that you are all committed, as we are, to the progress and economic development of our countries.
The ACF captures these values and these shared commitments; it is a unique event in the Western Hemisphere.
No other conference provides the opportunity for private sector and government leaders to share their thoughts and best practices for enhancing the competitiveness, innovation, and prosperity of the region.
While I am proud that this event was first created by the Department of Commerce several years ago, I am even happier that the conference has now become a successful undertaking that is shared and owned by all of us.
And we thank the Organization of American States for helping to institutionalize and carry forward this conference in the future.
It is becoming more and more difficult to compete in the global economy. Only through collaboration will we be able to grow as a region; only through cooperation will we be able to create better opportunities, both for our citizens and for our businesses.
The United States is fully committed to working with our partners in the Americas.
As many of you know, President Obama recently completed a major trip to Brazil, Chile, and El Salvador during which he highlighted the long history of friendship and partnership between the United States and Latin America.
The President has stressed that our futures are intimately bound together, and he has pledged to work together with our neighbors to improve the quality of life and economic opportunities for our citizens.
I want to reiterate the President’s commitment here tonight: we have a special relationship and we must seize every opportunity we can to work together.
It is very important to the United States Government that the ACF grow into an inter-American event.
If we want to advance the hemisphere’s competitiveness agenda, we need forward-thinking governments to host this event.
The Dominican Republic is the perfect host for the ACF because they have been a leader in setting the competitiveness agenda.
One of the first national competitiveness councils in the Americas was created over a decade ago here in the Dominican Republic.
Since then, many countries have looked to best practices of this country when developing their own competitiveness strategies.
The Dominican National Competitiveness Council was responsible for developing proposals to make leading sectors more competitive.
Now, with integrated supply chains and cluster-driven growth strategies, the agribusiness, manufacturing, construction, and tourism sectors have all seen substantial growth.
The Dominican Republic has also been an important leader in providing small businesses with better access to financing and technical assistance.
When you consider that small business accounts 25% of the gross national product and 30% of the jobs in the Dominican Republic; that is a big deal.
Andrés, I congratulate you for your leadership, and on behalf of the United States, I would like to express our gratitude for your efforts thus far.
I am sure that at this year’s ACF, we will hear countless more new ideas that lay the groundwork for innovative partnerships and business opportunities across the Hemisphere.
Mr. Vice President, I also thank you for your leadership and for the privilege of being with you this evening, and I wish you a very successful conference this October.
