Episode 61 (Peace Day) flow field

The currently active Peace Day flow (episode 61) is shown as the two shades of red—light red is the extent of the flow from September 21, 2011, to January 4, 2013, and bright red marks the mapped flow expansion from January 4 to January 30. While there have been small changes near the coast, most of the change is related to lava flows that have spilled from the Puʻu ʻŌʻō crater over the past few weeks. Older lava flows are labeled with the years in which they were active. Episodes 1–48b (1983–1986) are shown in gray; episodes 48c–49 (1986–1992) are pale yellow; episodes 50–53 and 55 (1992–2007) are tan; episode 54 (1997) is yellow; episode 58 (2007–2011) is pale orange; the episode 59 Kamoamoa eruption (March 2011) is at left in light reddish orange; and the episode 60 Puʻu ʻŌʻō overflows and flank breakout (Mar–August 2011) are orange. The contour interval for topographic lines shown on Puʻu ʻŌʻō is 5 m. (see large map)

Episode 61 (Peace Day) flow field on coastal plain

Large-scale map showing the mapped flow expansion on the coastal plain between December 14, 2012, and January 4, 2013 (in bright red). Light red represents the extent of the Peace Day flow from September 21, 2011, to December 14, 2012. Older flows are labeled with the years in which they were active. Changes to the perimeter of the flow farther upslope, from recent flows near the top of Royal Gardens subdivision, were not mapped and so are not shown here. (see large map)

Episode 61 (Peace Day) flow field

Map showing the extent of lava flows erupted during Kīlauea’s ongoing east rift zone eruption and labeled with the years in which they were active. The currently active Peace Day flow (episode 61) is shown as the two shades of red—light red is the extent of the flow from September 21, 2011, to November 30, 2012, and bright red marks the mapped flow expansion from November 30 to December 14. There may have been minor flow margin changes upslope, in and above the upper part of Royal Gardens, which have not been mapped and are not shown on this map. The active lava tube is delineated by the yellow line within the active flow field. Incipient tubes extend onto the coastal plain to feed the currently active flows, but these have not been mapped. The contour interval for topographic lines shown on Puʻu ʻŌʻō is 5 m. (see large map)

Episode 61 (Peace Day) flow field on coastal plain

Large-scale map showing the mapped flow expansion on the coastal plain between November 30 and December 14 (in bright red). Light red represents the extent of the Peace Day flow from September 21, 2011, to November 30, 2012. Older flows are labeled with the years in which they were active. The flow margin farther inland was not mapped but almost certainly includes small changes. (see large map)

Episode 61 (Peace Day) flow field on coastal plain

Large-scale map showing the mapped flow expansion on the coastal plain between November 20 and November 30 (in bright red). Light red represents the extent of the Peace Day flow from September 21, 2011, to November 20, 2012. Older flows are labeled with the years in which they were active. The flow margin farther inland was not mapped but almost certainly includes small changes. Most activity on the part of the flow that was mapped was focused along the eastern front of the flow and still about 100 meters (yards) from the ocean. There was no ocean entry today, but if the active flow front continues to advance at its current rate, it should reach the ocean within a few days. (see large map)

The currently active Peace Day flow (episode 61) is shown as the two shades of red—light red is the extent of the flow from September 21, 2011, to November 8, 2012, and bright red marks the mapped flow expansion from November 8 to November 20. Episode 61 (Peace Day) flow field on coastal plain

Large-scale map showing the mapped flow expansion on the coastal plain between November 8 and November 20 (in bright red). Light red represents the extent of the Peace Day flow from September 21, 2011, to November 8, 2012. While small surface flows were widely scattered all along the eastern edge of the flow on the coastal plain, most activity was focused at the leading part of the flow close to the ocean. The dotted gray lines within the flow field are the buried streets of the Royal Gardens subdivision. (see large map)

Episode 61 (Peace Day) flow field, coastal plain close-up

Map showing the extent of lava flows erupted during Kīlauea’s ongoing east rift zone eruption and labeled with the years in which they were active - this map extent only shows the lower flow field near the coast (where most of the recent activity is focused); see the October 29 map for the full extent of the flow field. Episodes 1–48b (1983–1986) are shown in gray; episodes 48c–49 (1986–1992) are pale yellow; episodes 50–53 and 55 (1992–2007) are tan; episode 54 (1997) is not in this map area; episode 58 (2007–2011) is pale orange; the episode 59 Kamoamoa eruption (March 2011) is not in this map area; and the episode 60 Puʻu ʻŌʻō overflows and flank breakout (Mar–August 2011) are also not in this map area. The currently active Peace Day flow (episode 61) is shown as the two shades of red—light red is the extent of the flow from September 21, 2011, to October 29, 2012, and bright red marks the mapped flow expansion from October 29 to November 8. There have been minor flow margin changes upslope, in the upper part of Royal Gardens, which are not yet mapped and not shown on this map. The active lava tube is delineated by the yellow line within the active flow field. An incipient tube extends downslope to feed the currently active flows, but it has not been mapped. (see large map)
