Washington, Mar 23, 2010 - Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) thanks Colonel Thomas H. Magness, IV, Los Angeles District Commander, U.S. Army Corps Engineers for his leadership and steadfast commitment to revitalizing the Los Angeles River.  The congresswoman wished him well as he prepares to embark on a new challenge on behalf of his country leading U.S. efforts to rebuild northern Afghanistan.  Col. Magness will leave his current position on July 1, 2010.  During the meeting, the congresswoman and Colonel Magness discussed the ongoing LA River revitalization project.  Plans for the 31 miles of the river include the development of parks, green space, pedestrian walkways, bridges, housing, and various economic development projects that will create jobs while maintaining the river's vital function of flood control for the community.  The congresswoman led efforts in the U.S. House of Representatives and worked with U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer to secure a $25 million authorization for Los Angeles River projects. The authorization ensures the long-term federal commitment to revitalize the blighted areas along the LA River and enables Congress to consider annual federal funding for new construction projects for river restoration and maintenance.  As a member of the Appropriations Committee, she successfully secures federal funds annually for LA River revitalization improvements, totaling more than $7.3 million in recent years.  To learn more about Col. Magness' distinguished service, please CLICK HERE.
