The New Hampshire National Guard provides a number of programs and incentives for Guard members to continue their education. These programs include tuition waiver and assistance programs, scholarships, living expense assistance, and free specialized training. The chart below breaks down the basic benefits and what's involved in each.

Benefits Free tuition while attending a NH State College or University $4500 per fiscal year (October 1st to September 30th) $750 scholarship awarded annually & paid directly to the school
  • Full tuition at any accredited institution up to the cost of the most expensive state school
  • Housing allowance if you attend at least half time
Requirements You must first apply for:
  • Tuition Assistance
  • NHNG Scholarship
  • FAFSA
You must apply for FTA each semester or period.
  • Complete the scholarship application
  • Wait for notification letter indicating money awarded
  • Provide a copy of the letter to your school

Restrictions Only applies to New Hampshire State College and Universities, not private or out-of-state schools.
  • Per-credit cap of $250.
  • May only be for one degree or certification at each level

  2. Fill out a FAFSA form at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
  3. Apply for Federal Tuition Assistance (FTA)
  4. Apply for the NH Scholarship
  5. Apply for the NH Tuition Waiver if you are attending a NH State Institution (University System and NH Community College System)
  6. Apply for your Mongomery G.I. Bill and G.I. Bill Kicker benefits

Additional Programs

College First: The College First enlistment option provides applicants who have no prior military service the opportunity to serve in the Army National Guard and complete up to two years of full time schooling. Applicants that enlist for 6 or 8 years are eligible for two years of stabilization (non-deployable status), and applicants that enlist for 3 or 4 years are eligible for one year of stabilization.

NHNG Enlisted Association Scholarship: The NHNGEA awards one $500, one $300 and one $200 scholarship annually. For more information or to apply, please download the NHNGEA Scholarship Application.

M.A. in Homeland Defense and Security: National Guard members are eligible for a tuition-free Homeland Defense and Security Master's Degree Program, sponsored by the US Dept. of Homeland Security for Domestic Preparedness at the Naval Postgraduate School. Troops to Teachers: Troops to Teachers helps recruit quality teachers for K-12 schools that serve low-income families throughout America. Troops to Teachers helps relieve teacher shortages in areas such as math, science, and special education while assisting military personnel as they transition to second careers in teaching.
