Position Title: Clinical Psychologist
Division: Pacific Islands Division
Location: Honolulu, HI

Position Description:
Pacific Health Research and Education Institute (PHREI), a nonprofit foundation affiliated with the Veterans Affairs Pacific Islands Health Care System (VAPIHCS), is seeking a Clinical Psychologist to work at the National Center for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Pacific Islands Division in Honolulu, Hawaii. This position is part of a 5-year Department of Defense funded clinical trial. The immediate objective of this project is to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of video-teleconferencing (VTC) for providing an evidence-based group intervention to rural veterans suffering with PTSD. It is hypothesized that using VTC will be as effective as the traditional mode of service delivery (in-person) for providing Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT); a well validated cognitive behavioral treatment for PTSD.

Salary is competitive and based on credentials and experience. The position is full-time with excellent benefits (medical, dental, vision), paid leave, and a generous 401(k) plan. Position is based in beautiful Honolulu, Hawaii with the opportunity to travel to other Hawaiian Islands. The position is approximately 50% clinical and 50% research with diverse professional opportunities and the ability to pursue related independent research after year one on the project. The psychologist will receive training from and be working closely with National Center for PTSD researchers and other leaders in the field.

Requirements:
The minimum requirements for both positions are:

  • Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from an APA accredited program
  • Completion of a Predoctoral Internship from an APA accredited program
  • Experience using Cognitive Behavioral Therapies
  • Experience conducting PTSD therapy and Group Therapy
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to understand VA regulations and procedures regarding research
  • Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables

It is highly desirable that candidates have:
  • Experience working with Combat Veterans or other military populations
  • Prior experience working in a VA, military, or other governmental setting
  • Experience working on rigorous, highly controlled research projects
  • Publications in Peer Reviewed Journals
  • Interest in Rural Health and/or Asian and Pacific Islander populations

Position Title: Staff Research Psychologist
Division: Behavioral Science Division

Position Description:
We anticipate one or more staff positions with duties beginning in 2013. A major focus of National Center of PTSD research is adjustment following military service, but candidates with background in related areas or with other types of trauma are welcomed. Aging, substance use disorders, brain injury, and treatment outcome in relation to trauma and PTSD are among current Division priorities.

The Behavioral Science Division is nationally recognized for developing model research and clinical programs in stress and trauma. The Division has outstanding resources for research, training, and clinical activities. Exceptional opportunities exist for professional collaboration locally, across National Center divisions, and in military and DoD settings.

Division staff supervise postdoctoral fellows in an NIMH-sponsored research training program and predoctoral psychology interns in an APA-accredited training program. Faculty appointment at the Boston University School of Medicine is anticipated. Salary and benefits are competitive.

Requirements:
Requirements for a position are a doctoral degree in Psychology with demonstrated skills in research, scientific publication, and grant writing. Clinical psychologists must have graduate training and clinical internship from APA-accredited programs, as well as existing professional licensure or eligibility for licensure.

Position Title: Research Health Scientist
Division: Pacific Islands Division
Location: Honolulu, HI

Position Description:
The Department of Veterans Affairs, National Center for PTSD, Pacific Islands Division, Honolulu, Hawaii, is seeking a GS-13 level Research Health Scientist with cross-cultural or health disparities expertise with a mental health focus. Best qualified candidate will have received R01-level research grants as well as a publication record that has impacted the field in the area of cross cultural factors or health disparities with a mental health focus, preferably with military or veterans.

Salary is competitive, based on credentials and experience. Position is "hard salary" not dependent upon grant reception, although active research portfolio is expected. Position is full-time with excellent benefits (medical, dental, vision), paid leave, and a generous 401(k) plan. Staff has potential for salary to be supplemented by additional collaborations with the University of Hawaii. National Center for PTSD research staff work closely with National Center for PTSD researchers, other leaders in the VA and DOD, and with University colleagues. VA researchers are able to apply for VA R&D funding, which has far higher rates of funding than NIH.

Requirements:
Minimum requirement is a doctoral degree in a relevant area (clinical, social, or experimental psychology; epidemiology, sociology, medical anthropology, etc), with demonstrated skills in research, publication, grant writing and management, and presentations in the area of mental health care disparities, underserved populations, and/or preventive clinical and educational intervention modalities in underserved populations, especially addressing culturally-appropriate factors and/or treatment of trauma-related mental health conditions in war-zone and other trauma populations.

Position Description:
The Behavioral Science Division anticipates openings and is seeking potential applicants for the position of research assistant (formally listed as health science specialist or psychology technician). Research assistants work closely with clinical psychologists on a variety of research activities in the area of posttraumatic stress disorder.

Responsibilities for these positions include:

  • Collecting data from research subjects and testing clinical patients
  • Entering data and managing databases
  • Performing statistical analyses
  • Conducting library research
  • Assisting in the preparation of grants, manuscripts, and professional presentations

This is an ideal opportunity for individuals with a Bachelor's degree who want to strengthen their research skills before applying to a graduate or professional program. Applicants should possess a keen interest in a career involving research. Other important qualifications include strong computer skills, a background in research methodology and statistics, and the maturity and interpersonal sensitivity necessary for working in a clinical setting.

Duties are expected to begin between June 2013 and September 2013. Salary and benefits are determined by the source of funding, but all financial packages are highly competitive with comparable positions at institutions in the Boston area.
