    Memorial Service in Epirus

    During a recent two-day visit to the region of Epirus, Ambassador Daniel B. Smith and his wife, Diane Smith participated in a memorial service for a victim of Greek civil war, Eleni Gatzoyiannis – the mother of prominent U.S. writer and journalist Nicholas Gage.

    Ambassador Daniel B. Smith and Mrs. Smith hosted an Iftar dinner on July 24 for representatives of various Muslim communities in Athens and members of the Muslim minority in Thrace. Greek government officials, as well as Orthodox Church and Jewish community representatives also attended.

    On June 28th, U.S. Embassy Athens employees teamed up with the American Women’s Organization of Greece (AWOG) and spent several hours at KAAPAA – a local center for disabled children.

    U.S. Ambassador Daniel B. Smith visited the city of Tripoli in the Peloponnese and met with Regional Governor Petros Tatoulis, Mayor Yiannis Smyrniotis, and the Chairman of the local Chamber of Commerce Yiannis Boudroukas.

    First Intercontinental Kidney Paired Donation

    Medical history was made on June 1 when a 31-year-old Oklahoma woman donated her kidney to a stranger living in Athens, Greece. In return, the Greek man’s wife donated one of her kidneys to another person in Pennsylvania, completing the first intercontinental exchange and opening a door that potentially can save thousands of lives throughout the world.

    Very Special Arts Reception

    Ambassador Daniel B. Smith and Mrs. Smith hosted a reception in honor of Very Special Arts Hellas’ 20th anniversary. VSA Hellas offers arts and education programs to people with disabilities.

    Ambassador Daniel B. Smith participated in the 2012 Olympic Torch Relay on May 10, 2012. Following the lighting of the Olympic Flame in Ancient Olympia, he carried the flame through the nearby town of Lechena.

    U.S. Embassy Athens employees, American Community School middle school students, teachers, and HELMEPA (Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association) recently joined forces to clean up a local beach in commemoration of Earth Day.

    Honoring the American Legion

    Ambassador Smith attended on April 25 an award ceremony hosted by the City of Athens honoring the American Legion Post 1 for their donation of a building in downtown Athens to the municipality. The building, which for 72 years housed American Legion Post 1, will now be used by the Office of Reception and Solidarity of the Athens Municipality “KYADA” to help the homeless.

    Stars Unite Against Human Slavery

    U.S. Embassy-sponsored NBA and WNBA players participated in a celebrity basketball game on April 3 in Athens aimed at educating local students about modern day slavery.
