  1. Earlier today, I stopped by a Heroes 2 Hired program in Holdrege to visit veterans thank employers for participating in the event. As a member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, ensuring our vets receive proper care is a top priority of mine, and I was pleased to see the veterans job fair in action. — in Holdrege, NE.

  3. Today, President Obama nominated former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel for Secretary of Defense. Chuck's military career is nothing short of admirable and he has been a long-time friend. I expect the confirmation hearing to be thorough and fair.
  4. I was pleased to welcome Nebraska's 39th Senator, Deb Fischer, to the Senate and look forward to working with her in the new Congress to tackle the big issues facing our nation.

  5. Tune in: Just after 9:30 a.m. CT this morning, I'll be live on KFAB to discuss the fiscal cliff agreement:

  6. This agreement isn’t my ideal option, but I firmly believe going over the cliff isn’t an option at all. I would have preferred stopping a tax hike for every American, significantly reducing spending and strengthening Social Security and Medicare. This package, however, protects an estimated 99 percent of Americans from being hit with the largest tax hike in our nation’s history.
  7. Today, I voted for, and the Senate passed the National Defense Authorization Act Conference Report. The report contained my legislation helping returning veterans find jobs, and funding to continue work on the new command facility for STRATCOM at Offutt Air Force Base. The advancement of this legislation is good news for our military, veterans and Nebraska.
  8. Today, I was proud to nominate Phil Petr and Ron Meyer of Blue Hill for the national Citizen Service Before Self Honors award. During September’s tragic school bus accident in rural Webster County, these men bravely entered the burning bus, rescuing five children. As we continue to mourn for those we lost, we also remember that if not for Ron and Phil, the tragedy would have been much worse.
  9. Sen. Inouye brought a quiet sensibility to issues before the Senate and will be deeply missed by his colleagues, constituents, family and anyone lucky enough to call him a friend.
  10. This week's cover photo was submitted by Michelle Smith of Lincoln. It shows the Bison Trail Bridge west of Lincoln.
  11. Today I spoke on the Senate floor congratulating and thanking my good friend Sen. Ben Nelson for his years of service to Nebraska. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHnKQ3PmmI8
  12. Tune In: This afternoon at 2:30 CT I'll be LIVE on America's Radio News Network to discuss proposed changes in Senate rules. http://www.americasradionewsnetwork.com/
