AACR 2010: NCI-Sponsored Session: The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) – Phase II: Strategy for the Comprehensive, Systematic Mapping of 20 Cancers

TCGA held an NCI-sponsored session at the American Association for Cancer Research's (AACR) 101st Annual Meeting 2010 to address the program’s Phase II structure and strategies for sample acquisition, evolving technologies, data management and analysis. Speakers discussed the plans for genomic characterization (including SNP, copy number, gene and miRNA expression profiling and epigenomics) and sequencing (including RNA, whole exome and genome) to yield both discovery and validation datasets for the community. The immense challenges involved in integrating and visualizing these complex data was addressed by speakers who explained TCGA's innovative approaches for the generation of “bioinformatic pipelines” and analysis. Data from specific pilot project and current tumors provided examples of how high-quality, multi-dimensional data sets from robust numbers of high-quality samples can inform a new generation of molecularly based interventions for cancer.
