National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

 September 27 is the fifth annual observance of National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. The day serves to highlight the continuing toll of the HIV/AIDS epidemic among gay men.
Gay and bisexual men are more severely affected by HIV than any other group in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), men who have sex with men (MSM) represent approximately 2% of the U.S. population but accounted for more than 50% of all new HIV infections annually from 2006 to 2009. By the end of 2009, an estimated 296,222 MSM with an AIDS diagnosis had died in the United States since the beginning of the epidemic.
