The purpose of this annual observance is to increase awareness of the impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2008, an estimated 25% of adults and adolescents living with HIV infection were female. When compared to women of other races and ethnicities, black and Hispanic/Latina women are disproportionately affected at all stages of HIV infection. In 2009, the rate of new HIV infections among black women was 15 times that of white women, and it was more than 3 times the rate among Hispanic/Latina women. Deaths attributed to HIV among women of color are disproportionately high: from 2000 to 2007, HIV infection was among the top 10 leading causes of death for black females 10 to 54 years old and for Hispanic/Latina females 15 to 54 years old.
Each year, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of AIDS Research (OAR) develops a Trans-NIH Plan for HIV-Related Research. The Reducing HIV-Related Disparities section of the 2012 Plan includes the following priorities for research on HIV and women and girls:
- Design and conduct studies that integrate the biological, behavioral, and social sciences to explain factors that influence HIV risk, pathogenesis, and prevention in women, girls, and infants.
- Define and analyze normal and abnormal female genital tract and anal/rectal immune function and their impact on HIV risk and acquisition.
- Define and analyze the impact of aging on HIV risk, pathogenesis, and prevention in women and compare it to the impact on men.
- Develop and study interventions to prevent intrapartum and breastfeeding-related mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
- Define and study interventions to affect maternal factors that contribute to mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
