News Release - VA awards early work packages for replacement medical center
VA awards early work packages for replacement medical center NEW ORLEANS — The Department of Veterans Affairs awarded four early work packages totaling more than $238 million Sept. 30, to its integrated design and construct (IDC) contractor, Clark-McCarthy Healthcare Partners, for the replacement VA medical center in New Orleans. These work packages are for a variety of construction services including renovation of the Pan-American building, piles and construction of two parking garages, pile caps and structural steel for the central energy plant and elevators for the entire medical center. VA will begin early activation of the medical center in 2013, once the Pan-American building is complete. This building will serve as the recruitment center for about 1,100 new employees and later as the administration offices for the entire campus. Medical services will begin activation in late 2014. Funding for the medical center was appropriated in fiscal years 2006 and 2010. Clark-McCarthy Healthcare Partners is a joint venture with Louisiana firms Woodward Design+Build and Landis Construction Company. Similar to construction management in the private industry, IDC is an acquisition method that allows the construction contractor to be involved in the project from design to completion. This can help identify any potential issues early and speeds the construction process. The New Orleans VA medical center will be a multi-building campus covering twelve city blocks totaling 29 acres. Additional campus buildings include inpatient, diagnostic and treatment, outpatient, transitional living and rehabilitation, and research.
