Innovations in American Government Award Winner — The Volpe Center's Global Maritime Domain Awareness Program won the 2008 Innovations in American Government Awards for its efforts in enhancing levels of safety and economic stability on the global seas.

Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program — The Volpe Center directs the Department of Transportation's SBIR Program due to its extensive background in innovative programs such as technology transfer, cooperative R&D agreements, outreach projects involving a cross-section of the transportation community, and technical assistance to state and local governments, as well as private organizations.
