David C. Tyrell
Train Crashworthiness and Safety
David C. Tyrell has worked as a Mechanical Engineer at the Volpe Center since 1982 and has worked on rail equipment crashworthiness since 1989. He helped develop the technical basis for the Federal regulations for the safety of passenger-carrying rail equipment published in 1999, for the safety of freight and passenger locomotives published in 2006, and for the safety of cab car end structures published in 2010. Mr. Tyrell has designed and overseen the implementation of full-scale impact tests of conventional and improved-crashworthiness passenger equipment. Mr. Tyrell received his Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1989 and his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1982, both from Tufts University. Mr. Tyrell is a registered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and is former Chair of the Rail Transportation Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
