Dr. Andrew Hansen
Aviation Modeling and System Design

Andrew Hansen is a Principal Technical Advisor on modeling and system design of the aviation enterprise. Dr. Hansen joined the Volpe Center in 2005 with a focus on studying environmental consequences across safety, capacity, and sustainability dimensions of the aviation sector. He draws on a wide base of knowledge gained over the last 22 years from academia, industry, and small business ownership. He has in-depth and practical experience in computational mathematics and optimization, statistical signal processing, geographic information systems, visual simulation and modeling, and software system design, airspace architecture, and navigation systems. His recent work at the Volpe Center combining FAA's NextGen navigation, airspace, and air traffic management principles into an environmental modeling framework has led to advancements in aviation efficiency in operational, decision support, ant policymaking functions for national and international bodies including FAA, NASA, JPDO, ICAO, and civil aviation authorities in Australia/NZ, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Japan, and the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation.

Dr. Hansen is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the Institute of Navigation (ION), and the Society for Computer Simulation (SCS) and has published regularly in journals and conference proceedings through these and other organizations. He received is BSEE ('91) and MSEE ('92) in Electrical Engineering from WPI and his PhD ('02) in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.
