| Function and Use: |
The agency created the files in order to automate data on friendly and enemy initiated incidents in Cambodia following the 1970 U.S. and South Vietnamese Army's incursion into Cambodia. The data originated from the Daily Analysis of the Military Situation Report (DAMSREP), issued by the U.S. Defense Attache's Office in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Staff in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense extracted data on the combat activity reported in the incident section of the DAMSREP. U.S. military strategists studied the development of the Cambodian conflict, as indicated by these data, and reported their perception of the situation to the Cambodian government in Phnom Penh. |

This series contains information on incidents involving friendly and enemy military units operating in Cambodia during the Vietnam War and Cambodian War. There are approximately 50,000 incident records and each may have three types of data, referred to as "sets." The first type is the Control Set with the date of the Daily Analysis of the Military Situation Report (DAMSREP) message from which the information in the record was derived, and the incident number. The second type is the Fixed Set. It contains data on the date and location of the incident; involvement of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) and/or the forces armées nationals khmères (KHMER); initiator of incident; objective; enemy weapons used; Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) and latitude and longitude coordinates; and enemy and friendly force nationality, unit number, and size. The third type is the Periodic Set, used for casualty data including information on the nationality or association and number of military officers and soldiers killed in action (KIA), wounded in action (WIA), missing in action (MIA), captured (CAP) or who rallied or deserted during the reported incident, and any narrative comments concerning the incident. If there were no personnel in any of the above categories, the Periodic Set will not contain any data. |

Users of the data should note that one incident operation may have more than one record. If an incident has more than one record, the control set of data are repeated in each record, but the fixed set and the periodic set of data are not repeated in each record. The fixed set of data and the first occurrence of the periodic set of data are displayed in only the first record of a combat operation that has more than one record. In order to determine whether a search has located all of the records related to a specific incident, the users of the data should also search the RECORD ID field for all records matching the RECORD ID number of the incident.
The data file may contain some obvious typographical and data entry errors such as misspellings. Some data fields may contain blanks or a series of asterisks. Data in the "Rallied" field contains unintelligible characters.
These files were a computerized application using the National Military Command System, Information Processing System or NIPS, a report generator software product. The NIPS software had three types of records: Control Set, Fixed Set, and Periodic Set. NARA received the records in a NIPS variable field length format and converted the records to a fixed-field format.
During the Vietnam War, the operational files had a number of "grouped" data fields. A group field joined two or more data fields into one. For example, the files grouped three data fields: Message Year, Message Month, and Message Day, into a fourth group field called Message Date. A group field provided an alternative way to enter search criteria. One could search the files by Message Date, or by one or more components of the message date.
AAD offers group fields for Message Date, Incident Date, Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM), Latitude and Longitude Coordinates, and ADCOR Country and Military/Political Subdivision Code.
