Troops to Teachers (TTT) provides Counseling and Referral services to military personnel interested in beginning a second career in public education as a teacher. The DANTES Troops to Teachers office will help applicants identify teacher certification requirements, programs leading to certification and employment opportunities.

TTT Program:

  • A federal (national) program designed to assist eligible military personnel in achieving their goal of becoming a teacher in the public school system of the United States, Grades K-12. It does not include the Department of Defense schools.

  • Funded by the Department of Defense and managed by the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES). Funding for the program is appropriated annually. The eligibility requirements for the program are based on federal legislation.

  • Operates on two levels: national and state. The national office processes all registration for the program and manages the funding. The state offices are responsible for issues relative to certification (licensure) and employment.

  • Offers two types of participation:

    • Funded: offers financial support for both the certification process and for employment in a high need school. If TTT funding is accepted teaching obligations are incurred.

    • Unfunded: offers counseling and assistance regarding certification.

  •  Individuals who have not registered with Troops to Teachers and are currently teaching should contact the Troops to Teachers national office to determine eligibility for funding. E-mail ttt@navy.mil or call 800-231-6242 and ask for “Finance”.
