New Visa requirement for U.S. Citizens traveling to Côte d’Ivoire
The Government of Côte d’Ivoire has advised the U.S. Embassy in Abidjan that effective February 15, 2009, American passport holders will be required to obtain an Ivorian visa for entry into Côte d’Ivoire. The U.S. Embassy expects to receive soon detailed information about the new visa procedures that will be published and distributed. Until then, travelers should consult with the nearest Ivorian embassy or consulate prior to embarking on a trip Côte d’Ivoire.
Absent details, it is not yet clear how this requirement will affect official Americans, how long it will take to get an Ivorian visa or how much it will cost. Côte d’Ivoire does not have representation in Niger, but the French Embassy in Niamey issues visas for travelers to Côte d’Ivoire. The French Embassy has advised that American diplomatic passport holders DO require a visa for official travel to Côte d’Ivoire. Those travelling with a tourist passport should also check with the French Embassy to ensure that they comply with the latest guidance. Please factor this new requirement into travel plans if planning to travel to Côte d’Ivoire on or after February 15, 2009 and check with the Travel Office and/or the Management Officer for the latest information.
