Family Members
Currently, Kirk Optometry Clinic will see TRICARE Beneficiaries by appointment for annual optometry visits and for updating prescription needs. Unfortunately, Kirk Optometry Clinic cannot issue new eye glasses to dependent beneficiaries, but will issue new prescriptions for these patients to purchase their eye glasses or contact lenses at their own expense. Retiree beneficiaries are authorized to order glasses, however, they are only authorized the traditional brown frames.  Retirees that are enrolled in the VA may receive metal frame glasses with current RX at the Perry Point VA Hospital 1-800-949-1003.

Ordering Glasses
Active duty Soldiers and retirees may walk in to order glasses with a current prescription (not over 1 year old and signed by a doctor) 0730-1630.
We are closed from 1300-1400 every Thursday afternoons for training.
Frame of Choice (FOC)
is a Quality of Life Program that provides ACTIVE DUTY Regular Army Soldiers with a choice of civilian-style eyewear one time per year. If they are broken, the frame can be repaired. There is no lens replacement.
Service members requiring military glasses should call or stop by the clinic for more information.  Safety glasses are ordered by contacting Jan Haddy at (410) 322-9380.

Contact Lenses
At present time the Optometrists do not routinely give new contact lens prescriptions; however new fittings will be considered on a case by case basis.  Fitting are sometimes limited by availability of trial lenses and the ability of patients to put lenses in and time.  Optometrists will however renew an existing contact lens prescription, provided the patient (1) has had a current eye exam within the past year, and (2) they have the contact boxes, their most recent prescription, or the exam showing the contact fitting information. The patient must also bring the contact lenses in to the clinic during the eye exam so the doctor can examine the fit of the lenses on the eye. We may not be able to provide contact fittings or contacts for patients. Patients wanting contact fittings or lenses should contact a civilian provider. Please call the Kirk Appointment line to schedule an appointment to have an existing contact lens prescription renewed.
DA PAM 40-506 prohibits contact lens wear during basic training, field exercises, gas chamber exercises, deployment, and combat.

War fighter Refractive Eye Surgery Program (WRESP)
Refractive surgery is offered for active duty Soldiers who meet the following criteria: (1) at least 18 months remaining on active duty; (2) at least 12 months remaining in the same unit or at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD; (3) no adverse personnel actions pending; (4) approval of their commanding officer for surgery; (5) no plans to deploy within 90 days of surgery. Non-active duty personnel are not authorized treatment under this program.
For Laser Eye Surgery (PRK, LASIK, LASEK), patients first step is a current eye exam by a military Optometrist here at Kirk Optometry Clinic. Once the doctor examines the patient they will be informed if they are a candidate for the procedure. Patients may obtain a packet for the surgery from the Kirk Optometry Clinic or the Walter Reed Refractive Surgery Site. The surgeries are performed at Walter Reed AMC.

MEDPROS Updates
It is the responsibility of a Soldier’s unit to conduct annual vision readiness screenings and enter the data into MEDPROS. Soldiers who are class 2 should schedule a routine eye exam to receive or update their corrective eyewear. Soldiers who are Class 3 will be referred to Optometry to have their MEDPROS updated.

A Vision Readiness Screening Guide has been developed for unit screeners. Optometry will assist in training screeners as necessary. Annual Visual Readiness Screenings are conducted on a walk- in basis Monday- Friday during normal hours of operation. Patients who wear glasses or who have been issued glasses should bring their glasses with them to the clinic for the screening. Patients who wear contacts and do not have glasses need to bring their contact lens case and remove their contacts once they arrive at the clinic.

Combat Eye Protection
Combat eye protection is purchased for Soldiers through their units. Optometry will provide prescription inserts for approved eyewear capable of accommodating inserts. Soldiers desiring prescription inserts should bring their protective devices with them to their exam or when ordering glasses. Here is a list of authorized protective eyewear.

Pupil Dilation
Patients should plan to have their pupils dilated during their examination. This will increase your light sensitivity and impair your near vision for a few hours after your appointment. Some patients choose to bring a driver.
