Challenge.gov
Challenge competitions around health are ramping up this year, especially around electronic records.
The Health Design Challenge asked designers and developers to re-imagine digital health records. This concept is so popular, there are 232 submissions. Peruse the entries and get an idea of who will be awarded a piece of $50,000 in prizes. Winners have already been notified and will be announced the week of January 6.
The challenge is run by Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. Their full page graphic details the trends in interest and use of electronic health records (EHRs):
- 80% of Americans who have access to their health information in EHRs use it
- Two out of three people would consider switching to a doctor who offers secure access to medical records
- 65% of Americans who don’t have access to EHRs say it’s important to have it
- 17 million consumers used their mobile device to access health information in 2011
- Doctors use of EHRs increased from 18% in 2001 to 57% in 2011

The Military Health Systems challenge also expects to have digital information and records component in submissions. The MHS innovation council is looking for ideas that support the Quadruple Aim:
- Readiness: How do we ensure the total military force is ready to deploy? How do we ensure that the medical forces are ready to deliver health care at any time?
- Population Health: How do we encourage healthy behaviors among all beneficiaries? How do we use preventative medicine to reduce the incidence of illness?
- Experience of Care: How do we provide the highest quality care that is patient and family centered?
- Per Capita Cost: How do we bend the cost curve by reducing cost and removing inefficiencies?
And the successful Blue Button challenge from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is already gaining traction in the marketplace. With this digital initiative, patients can download and take their electronic records directly from appointments when visiting participating medical facilities.

great posting. I think the challenges is to make it more interactive. I particularly like the posting about weight diet and exercise. I was wondering if there’s a standard place one can input their own information, which in the future can be shared with medical providers.

Not yet Mr. Morgan, but I think that is where government challenges and prizes are trying to take us. Electronic health records (EHRs) that port from one doctor to another. EHRs that are accessible no matter where you go for health care.
