Self Care Program

Kenner Army Health Clinic’s Self Care Program for Active Duty Personnel and Family Members

Self care is putting prevention into practice and taking personal responsibility for health. Self care includes a wide range of health-related decision-making skills and care undertaken by individuals on their own behalf.

Kenner Army Health Clinic is offering Self Care classes for Active Duty Service Members upon request. Please call 804.734.9249 to coordinate a class for your unit.

The class covers:

• Health maintenance

• Illness prevention

• Symptom evaluation

• Self-treatment using common remedies and over-the-counter (OTC) medications

• Using professional health care

Click here to view steps for obtaining a Kenner Self Care Card and/or "Healthwise Handbook" for Kenner beneficiaires.

Upon completion of the class, the Active Duty Permanent Party Service Member and family member will receive a card that allows for the participant to receive over-the-counter medications from a list of medications (click here to view self-care medication list) for cough, pain/fever, stomach problems, allergy symptoms, and skin problems through the Kenner pharmacy.

An additional option for education regarding self care, is Health Net'sTaking Charge of Your Health program found at

https://www.hnfs.net/content/hnfs/home/tn/bene/wellness/tcoyhlanding.html . After completing the online course, print off the page stating course completion and take it to the Kenner pharmacy. Pharmacy will issue the self care card.

Active Duty personnel that have a self care card from other installations will be able to use the Kenner Clinic Self Care program.

The Soldier self care program can:

• Reduce training time lost by Soldiers waiting to receive medical care

• Empower Soldiers to be responsible for personal health.

• Reduce health care costs by decreasing unnecessary sick call visits
