Pipeline Systems

On the following webpages, we discuss the various challenges with some of the pipe. PHMSA currently requires operators to report on the amount of cast iron, bare steel (protected and unprotected), plastic and pre-70 ERW (electric resistance welded) steel pipe. This does not mean that every cast iron or plastic pipe has integrity issues. For example, some plastic pipe being installed today has an excellent performance record. Unfortunately, some plastic pipe, such as that prone to brittle cracking, does not.

The two safety advisories discuss this issue:
ADB-99-01
ADB-99-02

PHMSA has prepared an extensive set of web pages for gas distribution cast iron pipelines. The following table shows the amount of bare steel distribution pipeline in each State.  PHMSA and its state partners monitor how operators are maintaining these and other types of pipeline that may be subject to integrity issues.  Download Table
