Sushil Sharma

Mechanical Engineering (ME) Group Leader, NSLS-II Accelerator Systems Division

Sushil Sharma is the head of the Mechanical Engineering (ME) Group in the Accelerator Systems Division of NSLS-II. The ME Group is responsible for the engineering and design of most of the mechanical systems of this new 3rd generation light source. From 1992 to 2006 he served as an ME Group Leader at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) built at ANL. At APS Sushil was responsible for all mechanical engineering aspects of the accelerator subsystems including magnets, support system, vacuum chambers, RF system, diagnostics components, thermal absorbers and process water systems. He also designed a cost-effective support system for the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) under construction at SLAC.

Before joining APS, Sushil was a project engineer at BNL from 1977-92. His expertise in thermal design and analysis led to a successful completion of Phase II upgrade of NSLS. He also participated in several design and safety studies of nuclear power plants on behalf of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Sushil is a recipient of the University of Chicago’s Distinguished Performance Award (2002) for his work at APS. He co-founded an international workshop (MEDSI), attended by most of the mechanical engineers working in light sources around the world. He received his Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) in 1977.
