Transportation & Climate Overview
The Nation's transportation system across land, air and waterway networks need timely, accurate and relevant environmental information to support countless decision-making needs. NOAA is responsible for providing such real-time information products, tools, and services for safe, efficient, and environmentally sound navigation (e.g. PORTS, weather forecasts, climate data). The need for these products is great and rapidly increasing, as these transportation networks are becoming increasingly crowded with passengers and cargo. To help optimize the safety and efficiency of air travel NOAA evaluates the monthly or hourly impact of thunderstorm activity across the U.S. detailed to specific airspaces surrounding major airports via NOAA's convective sigmet climate product. This information is highly valuable in determining which flight patterns are most frequently disrupted by convective activity.
