Colonel Michael L. Kuhn


Colonel Kuhn was raised in Damascus, Maryland and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant through the NROTC Program upon graduation from Old Dominion University in May 1988.  After completing The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia, he attended Assault Amphibian Officer Basic Course at Camp Pendleton, California. Reporting for duty with 2d Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2d Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina in November 1988, Colonel Kuhn served as Platoon Commander in Company A, Platoon Commander/Executive Officer in Company D, and the Battalion Assistant Operations Officer.  During this period, he completed a unit deployment rotation to 1st Armored Assault Battalion, 3d Marine Division, Okinawa, Japan and a deployment to the Mediterranean with the 24th MEU(SOC), participating in Operation Provide Comfort in Northern Iraq.

   In February 1992, Colonel Kuhn reported aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) in Norfolk, Virginia as the Marine Detachment Executive Officer.  He was promoted to Captain in October 1992 and assumed command of the Marine Detachment in June 1993 while deployed to the Mediterranean, participating in Deny Flight, Provide Promise, and Southern Watch.

   Upon transfer from sea duty in March 1994, Colonel Kuhn attended Advanced Armor Officer’s Course and the Cavalry Leader’s Course in Fort Knox, Kentucky.   In November 1994, Colonel Kuhn reported to 3d Assault Amphibian Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California where he served as the Commanding Officer of Headquarters and Service Company, Commanding Officer of Company C, and the Battalion Assistant Operations Officer.  While serving with Company C, he completed a unit deployment rotation to Combat Assault Battalion, 3d Marine Division, Okinawa, Japan in 1996.

   In July 1997, Colonel Kuhn was reassigned as the Inspector-Instructor for 3d Platoon (REIN), Company B, 4th Assault Amphibian Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Galveston, Texas.  He was promoted to Major in June 1998 and completed his tour as the I-I in July 2000.  Colonel Kuhn then reported to 2d Assault Amphibian Battalion and served as the Battalion Operations Officer during August 2000-June 2002, and the Battalion Executive Officer during June 2002-July 2003, deploying with the Battalion for Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.

   In September 2003, Colonel Kuhn was reassigned as the Section Head, Officer Plans, Manpower Plans and Policy Division, Manpower and Reserve Affairs, HQMC in Quantico, Virginia and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in January 2004.  During June 2005-June 2007, he served as the Commanding Officer of 2d Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2d Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.  After command, he attended the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.  

   In June 2008, Colonel Kuhn reported to United Nations Command/Combined Forces Command/Unites States Forces Korea where he served as the Marine Planner in C5 Contingency Plans Branch.  Upon his promotion to Colonel in June 2009, he was re-assigned as the J33 Current Operations Division Chief.  In July 2010, Colonel Kuhn completed his joint tour with USFK and was reassigned as the Deputy Commander of Marine Corps Forces Korea where he served until July 2011.   He currently serves as the Commanding Officer of Headquarters Battalion, Third Marine Division.    

   Colonel Kuhn’s personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
