Site Name: | Metolius Second Young Pine |
Description: | The Metolius New Young Pine site is located in the semi-arid region of central Oregon on land managed by the US Forest Service. In 1987, timber at the site was removed, with the remaining surface debris either burned or removed. Following the disturbance activity, the local area was turned into a mensuration plot in order to make long term assessments of forest resources. This led to the eventual location selection for the fifth tower in the Metolius group, a series of sites operated by Oregon State University under the leadership of Beverly Law as part of Terrestrial Ecosystems Research & Regional Analysis (TERRA PNW) project. |

Investigator Provided Vegetation Type![]() | The surrounding open-canopy forest is characterized by a very young ponderosa pine overstory, reaching a mean canopy height of 3.11 m. The understory is dominated by grasses (~70%) native to the semi-arid regions of central Oregon. Secondary species that total approximately 30% of the understory, include antelope bitterbrush and greenleaf manzanita. The abundance of understory grasses is typical of a forest that instead of allowing natural regrowth following timber removal, a mensuration plot was put in place. |
