Purpose
The purpose of the Cancer Prevention and Control Investigators Workshop is to convene key investigators from each of the Community Clinical Oncology Program's (CCOP) Research Bases to outline the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) expanded focus for cancer control and prevention research for the future. The expanded focus resulted from the yearlong deliberation of the CCOP Strategic Issues and Priorities, which have been approved by the Board of Scientific Advisors and the NCI Scientific Program Leadership Group. Workshop participants will be invited to provide input on research portfolio expansion and the feasibility of community participation.
The workshop also will highlight innovative research studies currently in progress to serve as concrete examples of the NCI's renewed thinking regarding the scope of research that will be supported by the Research Base cooperative agreements.
Staff scientists from other NCI programs and divisions will present topics from their research portfolios that may represent potential areas for collaboration.
Breakout sessions will be held to brainstorm and exchange ideas among investigators with common research interests. The need for future topic-specific workshops will be explored.
In addition, NCI staff members will highlight their highest priority research topics to gauge investigators' interest and to seek consensus.
