EOD Airmen reflect on sacrifices

ARGHANDAB RIVER VALLEY, AFGHANISTAN – Staff Sgt. Michael Burnett, 5th Civil Engineer Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of EOD quality and assurance, uses a mini mine detector to search for metal signature traces. Detectors like these are used to scan ground terrain for possible pressure plates which trigger improvised explosive devices. EOD Airmen frequently deploy to areas like Afghanistan and Iraq because of their expertise in dealing with IED’s, weaponry continually used by insurgents in these areas. (Photo courtesy/Staff Sgt. ALI AIR BASE, IRAQ -- Staff Sgt. Haven Cherry, 5th Civil Engineer Squadron noncommissioned in charge of explosive ordinance disposal supply and munitions, constantly dealt with the containment of unexploded ordinances such as this one during his deployment to Iraq. UXO's are used as improvised explosive device weaponry against coalition troops in combat environments overseas. 5th MXG deputy works alongside Iraqi Air Force

ALI BASE, Iraq -- Iraqi air force airmen check their CH2000 for any damage after a sand storm, Oct. 24, 2010, at Ali Air Base, Iraq, after being transferred from Basrah Air Base by the Iraqi Ministry of Defense. Iraqi air force squadron 70 flew the aircraft to conduct intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. After moving, Sq. 70 flew their first mission from Ali Base with U.S. Army AH-64 Apaches Oct. 25, 2010, providing ISR security of the Hajj - an annual pilgrimage of citizens to Mecca - while also providing ISR support of a main supply route and oil pipeline. Minot warriors make Ali Base home

ALI BASE, Iraq -- Iraqi air force airmen load furniture, no longer needed by the U.S. military, on a flatbed truck Oct. 22, 2010, at Ali Base, Iraq, for use in their own facilities. The Base Transition Team helps the Iraqi air force acquire equipment for basic needs to clearing debris, renovating buildings and acquiring facilities they will need to eventually transfer the base to Iraqi control. Rauglas (far left), 5th Civil Engineer Squadron readiness and emergency flight chief, interacts with local Afghan contractors during a site condition inspection. The captain served for nine months as commander of the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan which had the mission of overseeing the management of local construction projects and providing medical support to the local population. Interacting face to face with the local Afghan officials was an important part of the reconstruction mission because it helped build good relations between the military and the local populous.
