Cultural diversity, tolerance and art as a vehicle for positive social change were the themes that were discussed following a February 2 screening of the documentary, “Alvin Ailey: Beyond the Steps.” The film traced the development, historical influences and driving forces behind the formation of this seminal multi-racial dance troupe from New York.

The film showing formed part of PAS Abidjan’s activities marking the Black History Month (BHM). It was followed by a lively discussion that revolved around the role of art in society. The 80-person audience was composed of artists, art managers, USG sponsored exchange alumni, academics, graduate students, including those from the school of music, American Corner patrons, English club members, former participants and current nominees for the Youth Leadership for Social Entrepreneurship program, and the general public.

Cultural Affairs Officer AnnaMaria Adamo, who spoke from Washington via Skype, and Dr. Honore Kouadio, Assistant Professor at the English Department of the University of Cocody took questions and information specialist Teko Folli served as moderator. During the debate the participants raised many issues, including the role of songs and dances in the the emancipation and civil rights movements. Some Ivorians artists sought to understand what has made the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater popular, in hopes of emulating them. Other participants underscored the multi-racial and modern elements of the dance ensemble.

The program served the MSP goals of promoting democracy, civil society, diversity and tolerance, and mutual understanding.
