The end of the calendar year inevitably provokes a look back at the highlights of the previous 12 months.
Nowhere is that impulse stronger than it is in the newpaper business. Most newspaper practitioners, usually involved in chronicling day-to-day events, welcome the chance to reflect on the historical perspective of the news, and year's end is a convenient delineation.

As feared, the recent run of red-road conditions has caused the school system to postpone several athletic event scheduled for this weekend,
As of Friday morning, scheduled Friday basketball games postponed included Lakenheath at Ramstein, Bamberg at Ansbach, Wiesbaden at Baumholder and Hohenfels at Patch. In addition, Lakenheath's scheduled Saturday date at Kaiserslautern also was declared a no-go. According to DODDS-Europe athleticd director Karen Seadore, Lakenheath will attempt to play Jan. 7 at Kaiserslautern and Jan. 8 at Ramstein.

As difficult a task as any is compiling lists of the best of this or that, and choosing among teen-aged athletes is even harder.
Stars and Stripes, after a nearly two-decade avoidance of the all-star selection process, re-entered the morass by choosing to name players of the year in each sport this fall. Panels of high school coaches then joined in by voting their annual All-Europe teams in volleyball and football. Their choices were printed in Stripes last Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Tired of wondering, Baumholder's Erik Majorwitz took the ball and ran with it.
Apparently immune to the tedium of sifting through dusty paper or glitchy electronic files, Majorwitz spent considerable time this fall, ("Many, many hours...," according to DODDS-Europe's ultimate football history-maker and historian, Marcus George of Ansbach) compiling and making available on the Web every All-Europe football team from the inception of the all-star squad in 1968 to the 2010 version which appeared in Saturday's Stars and Stripes.
Those lists are available at the European high school football Web-site hsfootballeurope.net, thanks to the work of webmaster Sam Lightle, and you're invited to check them out. Go to the site and look on the left-hand side of the home page for the "All-Europe" tab.
The site contains lots more history than just the All-Europe teams, mainly because of George's own dogged research efforts.
And more histoical information is expected. Of the most immediate help would be the identities of the schools which won European football championships before 1975, the year the school system began scheduling title games. Prior to that, Stripes' longtime high school sports editor Ben Abrams picked football champions based on his own and coaches' impressions of the relative strengths of the teams each season.

SHAPE, Belgium -- Behind double-figure scoring from four players, the U.S. Armed Forces all-stars advanced to Saturday's championship game of the 47th annual SHAPE International Basketball Tournament with an 83-70 victory over Latvia on Friday night.
The Americans' third victory without a loss earned them a spot against Lithuania in Saturday's title game, according to Armed Forces sports director Ken Polk. Matt Holland led all U.S. scorers with 22 points. Cleveland Richard added 19, and Kenny Brewer and Jason Jefferson each scored 14 points. In addition, Holland and Jefferson each posted double-doubles. Holland grabbed 12 rebounds, five of them off the offensive glass, and Jefferson pulled down 10.

SHAPE, Belgium -- The U.S. Armed Forces all-stars will try to improve their record in the 47th SHAPE International Basketball Tournament to 3-0 Friday night when they take on Latvia in this annual pool-play tournament.
The Americans, idle Thursday, hammered the United Kingdom 103-62 Wednesday night, according to Armed Forces sports director Ken Polk, behind a team-high 23 points from Brandon Newman and 20 from Matt Holland. Cleveland Richard and Andrew Henke added 14 and 13 points, respectively, to complete the list of Americans in double figures.
