    52 New Peace Corps Volunteers Sworn in at U.S. Embassy

    Ambassador Donald Booth administered the oath of service to 52 new Peace Corps Volunteers at the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa today. With this new group, there are now 200 Peace Corps Volunteers in Ethiopia providing English language education, combating HIV/AIDS, preventing environmental degradation, and promoting food security. The Volunteers are located in Amhara, Oromia, Tigray, and SNNP Administrative Regions.

    U.S. Sponsors University Preparation Camp for Young Women at three Ethiopian Universities

    U.S. government provides support to a pilot University Preparation Camp (UPC) project for young women at three Ethiopian Universities. The UPC is a new, three year partnership with Addis Ababa University, Jimma University and Adama Science and Technology University designed to provide 2,250 women with skills and support that will be useful in completing their university education.

    U.S. Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman visits Ethiopia

    U.S. Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman visited Ethiopia as part of a seven country Africa visit. During her time in Addis Ababa, she met with government officials, African Union officials, and members of civil society. She also interacted with women of the business community during a visit with the Women’s Entrepreneur Group (WEG).

    U.S. Embassy Hosts Election Breakfast Reception

    The third highest-ranking Department of State official, Undersecretary for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman, joins Ambassador Booth to welcome guests at the Embassy’s breakfast reception marking the U.S. Presidential Elections. Ambassador Sherman is visiting Ethiopia to reaffirm the U.S./Ethiopia partnership and underscore our intent to continue work on the three pillars of the bilateral relationship: economic growth and development, democracy and human rights, and regional peace and security.

    The U.S. Embassy Launches Sports Envoy Program

    The U.S. Embassy in partnership with Sports United and U.S. Soccer organized a soccer program in Dire Dawa city from July 12-15, 2012, under the Sports Envoy Program. U.S. Sports Envoys Tony Sanneh and Kate Markgraf lead a soccer camp for 560 young students from the Dire Dawa, Harar and Jijiga regions.

    U.S. Embassy celebrates Independence Day on July 4, 2012 at The Ethiopian National Theatre. The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra (SJMO) Trio performed their music accompanied by Ethiopian musicians.

    Ambassador Donald Booth Visits Dire Dawa and Harar

    During his June 6-7 trip to Dire Dawa and Harar, U.S. Ambassador Donald Booth visited Haramaya University, the American Corner in Harar, Dil Chora Hospital and the Coca Cola bottling plant in Dire Dawa. As part of his visit, Ambassador Booth officially launched nine U.S. Embassy-funded Special Self-Help Program (SSHP) projects at signing ceremony held at the American Corner at the Dire Dawa Public Library. Together with Oromia Region Vice President Abdulaziz Mohammed, Ambassador Booth inaugurated the Haramaya University Community Radio Station. The founding of the radio station and training of personnel were supported by the U.S. Government. While visiting Harar, Ambassador Booth met with Harari Region President Ato Murad Abdulahadi at Rimbaud House in Harar. 

  • Earth Day Celebration
    Ethiopians and Americans Team up on Earth Day to Fight Deforestation

    On April 21, 2012, over 100 students from Addis Ababa’s 13 government preparatory schools and volunteers from the Peace Corps and the Embassy, including Ambassador Booth, joined forces to prepare the ground of Addis Ababa’s Millenium Park for planting at the beginning of the rainy season in June. The students came to the Embassy in the morning to learn about the experience of Ethiopia’s National Green Service volunteers. With Public Affairs Section funding, the volunteers carried out environmental help projects as part of a Summer 2011 camp. In the afternoon, the group put on their Earth Day t-shirts and caps and went to Millenium Park for the field work, organized in collaboration with Addis Ababa Environmental Protection Authority (AAEPA) and Tena Kebena Environmental Association. Ambassador Booth and Ato Haileselassie Sebhatu, General Manager for AAEPA commenced by planting a tree in Millennium Park, protected by the Federal as well as Addis Ababa Environmental Protection Authorities.

    Black History Month 2012 Celebrations

    The Public Affairs Section celebrated Black History Month (BHM) 2012 by organizing timed essay contests at the American Corners in Dire Dawa, Harar, Bahir Dar and Jimma where 370 students representing 25 high schools and preparatory schools participated. The 2012 BHM theme is “Black Women in American Culture and History” and the essay topics for the contests were on the life of Ida B. Wells-Barnett, one of the black women leaders well known for fighting and writing for justice. The tests and award ceremonies took place from February 9 through February 25. Representatives from the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa traveled to the American Corners for the contests and award ceremonies. Representatives from the American Corner host institutions and regional education bureaus also attended the award ceremonies where winner students and schools were recognized.

    In a February 21 to 26 trip to the Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s Region (SNNPR), U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Donald E. Booth visited the KMG Ethiopia Community-based Care Center for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) and Women Living with HIV/AIDS which receives U.S. Embassy support through the President’s Emergency Action Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

    U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Donald E. Booth visited Gambella from January 11 to 13 to visit U.S. government supported projects in health and education, meet with local government officials, and discuss regional issues in Gambella such as commercial farming and regional development. Ambassador Booth was accompanied by U.S. Agency for International Development Deputy Country Director for Ethiopia Jason Fraser and Mrs. Anita Booth.

    Ambassador Donald Booth visits Afar Region

    The US Ambassador to Ethiopia, Donald E. Booth paid a two day working visit to the Afar Region. The Ambassador took part in a US Embassy funded food donation project at a local Mosque to help the area’s less fortunate celebrate Ramadan. The Ambassador also awarded 15 girls with education scholarships through Rohi Wadu, an NGO that works with impoverished women to help them remain in school and receive an education. Ambassador Booth visited US Government supported projects in the region as well Semera University and the Tendaho sugar plantation factory now under construction. During his visit the Ambassador sat in on a community conversation with women from a local village where HIV prevention and personal hygiene training were discussed. He also met with government officials including the Regional President, Awal Wagris Mohammed and the President of the Islamic Supreme Council, Hajji Ismael Abdella.

These are the Four Freedoms outlined by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in his famous address to Congress and later depicted by Norman Rockwell.
