Enlistment in the U.S. Armed Forces For U.S. Citizens

This information is intended for those making inquiries from Belgium.

Military recruitment does not fall within the scope of the Defense Attaché Office at the American Embassy, Brussels. However, the following general information is provided for your reference: All applicants for enlistment in the U.S. Armed Forces (as well as the U.S. Civil Service and law enforcement agencies) must be either:

  • a U.S. citizen
  • a registered alien who is
  • legally and permanently resident in the U.S., and
  • in possession of a U.S. Immigration ('Green') Card (INS 1-151 or INS 1-551) and Social Security number.
