Eid al-Fitr Message from Secretary Clinton

August 30, 2011

Today marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting and prayer for Muslims all over the globe. I would like to wish all Muslims around the world a peaceful and joyous Eid al-Fitr.  This is an occasion for celebration, where Muslims join together to reflect on the important values of family, charity, and community.

During this time, Muslims in America and across the world will celebrate Eid with gatherings that reflect their rich and diverse cultural traditions.  I have been fortunate to see the amazing work of Muslims in every corner of the world, including young people, who are dedicated to building stronger communities through education, business, health, and development.

When I was First Lady of the United States, I was proud to host the first Eid celebration at the White House, and I have been honored to host annual Iftars as Secretary of State.  This year, I am especially pleased
to be hosting an Eid al-Fitr celebration here at the State Department.  We will take this opportunity to highlight the contributions of American Muslim athletes to our country, both in and out of competition.  They
remind us that Muslims are part of the strength of the American fabric.

On behalf of the State Department, I wish you Eid Mubarak.

Sincerely yours,

Hillary Rodham Clinton
