Demonstration Notice - May 12, 2011 at noon

The Embassy has received reports of two planned protests to commence at 12 noon. The first is of approximately 100 people to gather at Victoria Park and will march to the University Grants Commission on Ward Place, Colombo 7.

The second is a protest of about 500 people to gather at Victoria Park and attempt to proceed to Liberty Circle Colombo 3. A heavy police presence and traffic congestion is expected.

Spontaneous demonstrations take place in Sri Lanka from time to time in response to world events or local developments.  We remind U.S. citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and become violent.  U.S. citizens are therefore urged to avoid demonstrations and to exercise caution if in the vicinity of any demonstrations.  U.S. citizens should monitor media coverage of local events and this website and be aware of their surroundings at all times.
