The Embassy has received reports of a protest against the UNDP. 2,000 persons are expected to march today morning from Bambalapitiya along Havelock Road to UNDP on Buller's Road (Bauddhaloka Mawatha). Expect heavy traffic, police presence and possible road closures.
Spontaneous demonstrations take place in Sri Lanka from time to time in response to world events or local developments. We remind U.S. citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and become violent. U.S. citizens are therefore urged to avoid demonstrations and to exercise caution if in the vicinity of any demonstrations. U.S. citizens should monitor media coverage of local events and this website and be aware of their surroundings at all times.
