U.S-Indonesia Bilateral Trade and Investment

U.S. goods and services trade with Indonesia totaled $29 billion in 2011. Exports totaled $9 billion; Imports totaled $20 billion. The U.S. goods and services trade deficit with Indonesia was $10 billion in 2011.

Indonesia is currently our 28th largest goods trading partner with $26.5 billion in total (two ways) goods trade during 2011. Goods exports totaled $7.4 billion; Goods imports totaled $19.1 billion. The U.S. goods trade deficit with Indonesia was $11.7 billion in 2011.

Trade in services with Indonesia (exports and imports) totaled $2.1 billion in 2011. Services exports were $1.7 billion; Services imports were $437 million. The U.S. services trade surplus with Indonesia was $1.3 billion in 2011.

Exports

Indonesia was the United States= 35th largest goods export market in 2011.

U.S. goods exports to Indonesia in 2011 were $7.4 billion, up 6.7% ($468 million) from 2010, and up 191% from 2000.

The top export categories (2-digit HS) in 2011 were: Aircraft ($1.2 billion), Miscellaneous Grain, Seed, Fruit (primarily soybeans) ($869 million), Machinery ($859 million), Cotton Yarn and Fabric ($522 million), and Cereals (wheat and corn) ($398 million).

U.S. exports of agricultural products to Indonesia totaled $2.8 billion in 2011, the 8th largest U.S. Ag export market. Leading categories include: soybeans ($862 million), cotton ($524 million), feeds and fodders (excluding pet food) ($302 million), wheat ($268 million), and dairy products ($210 million).

U.S. exports of private commercial services* (i.e., excluding military and government) to Indonesia were $1.7 billion in 2011, 5.4% ($89 million) more than 2010 and 53% greater than 2000 levels. Other private services category (mostly business, professional, and technical services) accounted for most of the U.S. exports in 2011.

Imports

Indonesia was the United States= 25th largest supplier of goods imports in 2010.

U.S. goods imports from Indonesia totaled $19.1 billion in 2011, up 16.0% ($2.6 billion) from 2010, and up 84% from 2000.

The five largest import categories in 2011 were: Rubber ($3.6 billion), Knit Apparel ($2.8 billion), Woven Apparel ($2.2 billion), Electrical Machinery ($1.8 billion), and Mineral Fuel (oil) ($847 million).

U.S. imports of agricultural products from Indonesia totaled $4.3 billion in 2011, the 3rd largest supplier of Ag imports. Leading categories include: rubber and allied products ($2.9 billion), tropical oils ($361 million), coffee (unroasted) ($325 million), spices ($182 million), and cocoa paste and cocoa powder ($166 million).

U.S. imports of private commercial services* (i.e., excluding military and government) were $437 million in 2011, 2.6% ($11 million) from 2010, and up 2% from the 2000 levels. Travel and the other Private Services (business, professional, and technical services) category accounted for most of the U.S. services imports from Indonesia.

 Trade Balance

The U.S. goods trade deficit with Indonesia was $11.7 billion in 2011, a 22.7% increase ($2.2 billion) over 2010.

The United States has a services trade surplus of $1.3 billion with Indonesia in 2011, up 6.5% from 2010.

Investment

U.S. foreign direct investment (FDI) in Indonesia (stock) was $11.6 billion in 2011, 9.3% increase from 2010.

U.S. FDI in Indonesia is primarily concentrated in the mining sector.

Indonesia FDI in the United States (stock) was $155 million in 2011, up 12.3% from 2010.

The distribution of Indonesia FDI in the United States is not available.

Sales of services in Indonesia by majority U.S.-owned affiliates were $2.7 billion in 2010 (latest data available), while sales of services in the United States by majority Indonesia-owned firms were $87 million.
