Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Jeff Radebe, opened a USAID-sponsored centre for victims of rape and other forms of gender violence at Karl Bremer Hospital in Bellville on Monday May 3. Mr Radebe hailed the new centre as groundbreaking and said it would help to slowly but surely put an end to the abuse of women and children” in South Africa.

The Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC) in Bellville is the 25th of its kind in the country, and the ninth built with USAID’s support.

TCCs work with police stations, NGOs, courts and hospitals to provide direct services to victims of violence.

US Consul General, Dr Alberta Mayberry, who attended the ceremony, thanked Advocate Thoko Majokweni and her team for their leadership and commitment to this project. She also saluted the National Prosecuting Authority’s Sexual Offenses and Community Affairs (SCOA) Unit.

“Only through partnership can we defeat the scourge of violence against women and children,” Dr Mayberry said.
