National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA)
The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) within the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is responsible for the management and security of the nation's nuclear weapons, nuclear nonproliferation and naval reactor programs. It also responds to nuclear and radiological emergencies in the United States and abroad. Additionally, NNSA federal agents provide safe and secure transportation of nuclear weapons and components and special nuclear materials along with other missions supporting the national security.
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) delivers science-based solutions to advance NNSA's global nuclear security goals. We do this through research and development, policy support, and implementation of nonproliferation technologies and systems.
Through PNNL's 40-year Hanford mission heritage, we have developed a strong foundation in actinide separations science, the nuclear fuel cycle, international safeguards and export control, nonproliferation technology, and nuclear fuels and materials. These capabilities are highly aligned with NNSA and U.S. government priorities in arms control and disarmament, nonproliferation, and nuclear cooperation and security. State-of-the-art facilities at PNNL enable scientists to develop, integrate, and test radiation detection methods and technologies for identifying weapons of mass destruction and terrorist activities and for supporting international treaties and agreements. Our staff support NNSA in more than 60 partner countries as well as on assignment in NNSA program offices.
