The Protected Species Workshop is available in a classroom setting or online for owners and captains who have already completed a classroom workshop.
Protected Species Workshop
Owners and operators of western Pacific pelagic longline vessels must complete the Protected Species Workshop each year. A valid workshop certificate is necessary for owners to renew fishing permits.
Each year, over 200 fishermen and vessel owners are trained in Hawaii, and almost 100 are trained in American Samoa.
Fishermen learn from presentations, hands-on demonstrations, videos, and printed reference materials.
The workshop training includes:
- Protected species identification
- Handling and release techniques
- Regulatory requirements
Protected species covered in the workshop include:
