The Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) mandates that the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) maintain the Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program and monitor the status of all marine mammals.
The Southeast Fisheries Science Center is responsible for marine mammal responses in the southeast region of the United States including the beaches from North Carolina to Texas, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The SEFSC Marine Mammal group is divided in two teams:
- Health & Stranding Response, including Mortality Estimations
- Assessment, including Biscayne Bay Photo ID project
