Captain Al Haynes, retired United Airlines pilot and hero of United Flight 232, shares his personal accounts with more than 500 Airmen on “Teamwork in Crisis” during his visit to Travis AFB on May 19. On July 19, 1989, Haynes piloted his DC-10 from Denver, CO to Chicago, Ill. with 296 passengers and crew on board. During the flight, the aircraft lost complete hydraulics functions and the aircraft crashed landed onto the Sioux City Airport runway in Sioux City, Iowa. Haynes’ experience and calmness under pressure saved the lives of 184 passengers that day. He retired from United Airlines two years after the incident and began touring the country talking about his experiences. He has done about a thousand presentations over the last ten years.
