tabHistory, Duty and Accolades
This band, designated as the 571st Air Force Band, has been located in St. Louis since the late nineteen forties. Military bands have been in the St. Louis area for many years as early photos from Jefferson Barracks show the 3rd Calvary Band in 1898. John Phillip Sousa led that band at Jefferson Barracks during the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904. In years past, the 571st has occupied that same facility at JB that Sousa did at the turn of the century.

Outstanding Unit 1968 Other duties performed by the band have included assignment as riot control trainers for the 131st TAC Fighter Wing during 1967-1968. The band was selected for this duty because it was the best organized and drilled unit in the wing. In 1968, the band won Outstanding Unit Award for the entire wing. 1993 marks a time in history when members of the band supported the flood efforts in Missouri. By providing flood security in various parts of the St Louis area, band members received a state ribbon for this honorable duty.

Recent accolades include supporting Operation Noble Eagle - a counter terrorist operation launched after 11 September 2001. Several members of the band volunteered as Security Police Augmentees to insure Home Land security measures.

Also in 2006, Sidewinder - our Rock ensemble deployed to the middle east for a tour that offered troop moral support and public relations to the region. Their deployment marked the first time for an Air National Guard Band unit to deploy to the Middle East in support of the war time mission.
