Report Terms

Note: For job definitions not otherwise specified, the reference period is the 2nd quarter of each calendar year (April-June). Throughout OnTheMap—unless otherwise stated—jobs are defined as 'Beginning of Quarter Employment'. Beginning of Quarter Employment is the total number of workers who were employed by the same employer in both the current (2nd) and previous (1st) quarter.


Total All Jobs A count of all jobs that meet a user's specification of geography, years, and/or labor market segments.

Total Primary Jobs A count of primary jobs that meet a user's specification of geography, years, and/or labor market segments. A primary job is the highest paying job for an individual worker for the year. The count of primary jobs is the same as the count of workers.

Total Private Jobs A count of private-sector jobs that meet a user's specification of geography, years, and/or labor market segments.

Total Private Primary Jobs A count of private-sector primary jobs that meet a user's specification of geography, years, and/or labor market segments. A primary job is the highest paying job (either public or private) for an individual worker for the year.

Report Settings A section at the bottom of each report summarizing the settings and selection area(s) chosen in the Analysis Settings popup.

Terms from Area Profile and Area Comparison Reports

Jobs by Worker Age The categories are Age 29 or younger, Age 30 to 54 years, and Age 55 or older.

Jobs by Earnings The categories are $1,250 per month or less, $1,251 to $3,333 per month, and more than $3,333 per month.

Jobs by Industry Type (2-digit NAICS) The categories are all 2-digit NAICS codes, otherwise known as industry sectors. See the U.S. Census Bureau's documentation on NAICS for more information on these industry sectors.

Jobs by Worker Race The categories are White Alone, Black or African American Alone, American Indian or Alaska Native Alone, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander Alone, and Two or More Race Groups. Worker Race variables are only available for 2009 and 2010 data.

Jobs by Worker Ethnicity The categories are Not Hispanic or Latino and Hispanic or Latino. Worker Ethnicity variables are only available for 2009 and 2010 data.

Jobs by Worker Educational Attainment The categories are Less than High School, High School or equivalent (no college), Some College or Associate degree, and Bachelor's degree or advanced degree. Worker Educational Attainment variables are only available for 2009 and 2010 data and for workers aged 30 or older.

Jobs by Worker Sex The categories are Male and Female. Worker Sex variables are only available for 2009 and 2010 data.

Terms from Distance/Direction Report

Job Counts in Home/Work Blocks by Distance Only The categories are Total Jobs (based on selected job type), Less than 10 miles, 10 to 24 miles, 25 to 50 miles, and Greater than 50 miles. Job counts are binned in distance groups based on the distance between each home and work block pair associated with the user-selected analysis settings and selection area.

Job Counts in Home/Work Blocks to the North/North East/East/South East/South/South West/West/North West by Distance The categories are Total Jobs (based on selected job type), Less than 10 miles, 10 to 24 miles, 25 to 50 miles, and Greater than 50 miles. Job counts are binned in distance groups based on the distance between each home and work block pair associated with the user-selected analysis settings and selection area. Jobs counts are included in a particular direction's table if the destination block resides in that direction from the origin block.

Terms from Destination Report

Job Counts by Destination Type Where Workers are Employed/Live Destination areas are displayed in descending order based on the count of jobs living/working in each area. The number of destination results displayed is determined by the Number of Results selected in the Results tab.

Terms from Inflow/Outflow Report

Selection Area Labor Market Size (Job Type) The categories are Employed in the Selection Area, Living in the Selection Area, and Net Job Inflow (+) or Outflow (-). Net Job Inflow/Outflow displays whether the selection area is a labor force magnet or provider.

In-Area Labor Force Efficiency (Job Type) The categories are Living in the Selection Area, Living and Employed in the Selection Area, and Living the the Selection Area but Employed Outside. This table examines the efficiency of the selection area's labor force from the home perspective.

In-Area Employment Efficiency (Job Type) The categories are Employed in the Selection Area, Employed and Living in the Selection Area, and Employed in the the Selection Area but Living Outside. This table examines the efficiency of the selection area's employment from the work perspective.

Outflow/Inflow/Interior Flow Job Characteristics (Job Type) The categories are Total Job Count (per flow type), Workers Aged 29 or younger, Workers Aged 30-54, Workers Aged 55 or Older, Workers Earning $1,250 per month or less, Workers Earning $1,251 to $3,333 per month, Workers Earning More than $3,333 per month, Workers in the "Goods Producing" Industry Class, Workers in the "Trade, Transportation, and Utilities" Industry Class, and Workers in the "All Other Services" Industry Class.

Jobs by Worker Age The categories are Total Jobs (based on selected job type), Age 29 or younger, Age 30 to 54 years, and Age 55 or older. Jobs count totals for the Paired Area, Home Area Only, and Work Area Only as set side-by-side for comparison.

Jobs by Earnings The categories are Total Jobs (based on selected job type), $1,250 per month or less, $1,251 to $3,333 per month, and More than $3,333 per month. Jobs count totals for the Paired Area, Home Area Only, and Work Area Only as set side-by-side for comparison.

Jobs by Industry Segment The categories are Total Jobs (based on selected job type), Goods Producing, Trade Transportation and Utilities, and All Other Services. Jobs count totals for the Paired Area, Home Area Only, and Work Area Only as set side-by-side for comparison.
