Embassy-sponsored conference on participatory democracy and elections systems
2012 IVLP Grassroots Democracy and Elections alumni Alhousseini Maiga led an Embassy-sponsored conference on participatory democracy and elections systems. He highlighted aspects of the U.S. elections system that would benefit Malians, such as selecting candidates based on their qualifications and platform, a true separation of powers limiting the President’s authority, and especially civil society participation in the elections through vote observation and civil society organizations. He said he “was particularly impressed by the American sense of patriotism,” that leads people to vote because they love their country and want to choose its leader.

Cojem, Youth Association Focuses on Education and Building Citizenship
A youth association focused on education and citizenship building, COJEM, in partnership with the US Embassy, launched a series of regional seminars about civic education and Islam, targeted to madrassah teachers and students, as well as youth leaders.
