The NNSA plays a critical role in ensuring the security of our Nation by maintaining the safety, security, and effectiveness of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile without nuclear testing; reducing the global danger from the proliferation of nuclear weapons and materials; providing the U.S. Navy with safe and effective nuclear propulsion; and providing the Nation with an effective nuclear counterterrorism and incident response capability.

Neile L. Miller

Acting Administrator

 

Neile L. Miller is the Acting Administrator for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Her nomination for Principal Deputy Administrator by President Obama was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 5, 2010. As Acting Administrator and Chief Operating Officer, she focuses on matters of management and policy across the NNSA enterprise to define a coherent vision for achieving the President’s nuclear security agenda.

Lempke

Michael K. Lempke

Associate Principal Deputy Administrator

Michael K. Lempke is the Associate Principal Deputy Administrator for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and serves as the Deputy Chief Operating Officer for the Nation’s Nuclear Security Complex.  He also serves as the Associate Administrator for Infrastructure and Operations and is responsible for the integrated, effective and efficient oversight of the Nuclear Security Enterprise through management of the NNSA Site Offices.  In addition, Michael serves as the NNSA’s Senior Internal Affairs Management Official.

Dr. Donald L. Cook

Dr. Donald L. Cook

Deputy Administrator for Defense Programs

Dr. Donald L. Cook serves as the Deputy Administrator for Defense Programs at the National Nuclear Security Administration. Appointed to the position by President Barack Obama, Dr. Cook was sworn in as NNSA’s 5th Deputy Administrator in June 2010. He is responsible for managing the U.S. nuclear security enterprise of laboratories and manufacturing facilities. One of the primary missions of NNSA is to maintain and enhance the safety, security and reliability of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile. NNSA, through its Office of Defense Programs, ensures that the U.S. nuclear arsenal meets the country’s national security requirements and continues to serve its essential deterrence role.

Anne Harrington

Anne Harrington

Deputy Administrator for Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation

Anne Harrington was sworn in as Deputy Administrator for Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation for the National Nuclear Security Administration in October 2010. Previously, Ms. Harrington was the Director of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences Committee on International Security and Arms Control (CISAC) a position she held from March 2005 to October 2010.

Admiral John M. Richardson

Admiral John M. Richardson

Deputy Administrator for NNSA's Office of Naval Reactors

Admiral Richardson graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in Physics.  He also holds Masters Degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and the National War College.

Richardson served in USS Parche (SSN 683), USS George C. Marshall (SSBN 654) and USS Salt Lake City (SSN 716).  He commanded USS Honolulu (SSN 718) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and was awarded the James Bond Stockdale Leadership Award.

Robert B. Raines

Robert B. Raines

Associate Administrator for Acquisition and Project Management

With over 30 years of experience in construction management, design management, utilities systems operations, employee development, budgeting and contracting, Robert B. Raines serves as the Associate Administrator for Acquisition and Project Management (APM). 

Bob comes to NNSA from DOE’s Office of Engineering and Construction Management where he served as the Director for Project Management Systems and Assessments since 2008.  Prior to joining the Department, he worked for CH2M HILL where he was responsible for environmental remediation work for the U.S. Navy.  Bob served for 27 years in the Navy’s Civil Engineer Corps retiring as a Captain after two Command tours.

Joseph J. Krol Jr.

Associate Administrator for the Office of Emergency Operations

Joseph J. Krol, Rear Admiral, United States Navy (Retired), is the Associate Administrator for NNSA's Office of Emergency Operations. In this role, he is the Director of the Office of Emergency Operations, which is responsible for emergency management policy and execution of emergency management support across the Department of Energy's complex. Within the National Nuclear Security Administration, he also is responsible for emergency operations, involving nuclear, and radiological emergencies, both within the United States and abroad.

Steve Asher

Acting Chief and Associate Administrator for the Office of Defense Nuclear Security

Colonel Steve Asher (Retired) is the Acting Chief and Associate Administrator for Defense Nuclear Security. Mr. Asher has over three decades of experience in national security, much of it commanding security forces in the Air Force.  His experience includes overseeing and leading security forces at both continental and overseas assignments.

Bruce Diamond

Bruce Diamond

General Counsel

Bruce Diamond became the General Counsel for the NNSA in February, 2011.  Before that, Bruce was DOE Assistant General Counsel for Environment, the senior career environmental attorney for the Department dealing principally with complex issues regarding the clean-up of the nuclear complex and implementation of National Environmental Policy Act obligations.  In addition, he was responsible for addressing health and safety issues.

Clarence T. Bishop

Associate Administrator for External Affairs

Clarence T. Bishop serves as Associate Administrator for External Affairs.  In this role, he is responsible for managing NNSA's Congressional Affairs, Public Affairs, and Intergovernmental Affairs efforts to effectively communicate, promote and defend the NNSA's mission, goals and budget.

Dr. Steven Aoki

Dr. Steven Aoki

Associate Administrator and Deputy Under Secretary for Counterterrorism and Counterproliferation

Steven Aoki is the Associate Administrator and Deputy Under Secretary for Counterterrorism and Counterproliferation.  In this position, Dr. Aoki is responsible for coordinating counterterrorism policy throughout the U.S. Department of Energy. He reports to Thomas D’Agostino, Administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration. Much of the focus of the department’s counterterrorism efforts centers on the nuclear security enterprise, but also cuts across many organizations in the DOE.

Don Nichols

Don Nichols

Associate Administrator for Safety and Health

Don Nichols advises the Administrator in matters relating to nuclear facility and nuclear explosive operations, advises other senior officials on associated policy matters, and assists NNSA field and program elements with identifying and resolving nuclear safety issues as requested. He is responsible for assuring that issues concerning nuclear safety are identified and resolved.

Cindy Lersten

Associate Administrator for Management and Budget

Ms. Cindy Lersten, a 20-year career professional in government and a member of the Senior Executive Service, is serving as Associate Administrator for Management and Budget at NNSA after serving in the role of Deputy Associate Administrator for the past six-months.  As a recipient of the 2008 OPM Presidential Meritorious Rank Award for her work in globally reducing weapons of mass destruction and her achievements in mentoring and training across government, Ms. Lersten with her notable experience will be responsible for NNSA’s human capital management policies and programs; leadership and development; financial management programs, and administrative operations supporting more than 33,000 employees nation-wide.
