Brigadier General Daniel D. Yoo

Brigadier General Yoo currently serves as the Commanding General, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego and the Western Recruiting Region. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Arizona State University in 1984.

In March 1985, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant following completion of Officer Candidate School. Upon graduation from The Basic School and the Infantry Officers Course, General Yoo reported to the 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California, in April 1986. He was assigned duty with 2d Battalion, 9th Marines and served as a Rifle Platoon Commander, Heavy Machine Gun Platoon Commander, Weapons Company Executive Officer, and a Rifle Company Commander.

After receiving orders overseas, he reported to 3d Reconnaissance Battalion, 3d Marine Division, Okinawa, Japan, in May 1989. During this tour, he served as a Reconnaissance Platoon Commander and a Reconnaissance Company Commander. Returning from overseas in August 1991, General Yoo attended Amphibious Warfare School, Quantico, Virginia. In May 1992, he was assigned duties as the Inspector-Instructor, Detachment, 4th Force Reconnaissance Company, in Reno, Nevada.

In June 1995, he was transferred to Headquarters Marine Corps, Washington, DC. He served as an Action Officer in the National Plans Branch, Strategy and Plans Division and as the Administrative Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Staff, Plans, Policies and Operations. In July 1998, General Yoo attended the Naval Command and Staff College, Newport, Rhode Island, earning a Masters of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. In August 1999, he was assigned duty with the Current Operations Division, G3, II Marine Expeditionary Force and the 2d Marine Expeditionary Brigade, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In March 2001, he was assigned duties as the Operations Officer, 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable).

General Yoo commanded Infantry Training Battalion, School of Infantry (East) from July 2002 to June 2004. Following this command tour, General Yoo spent a year as a National Security Affairs Fellow at the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace, Stanford University. In July 2005, he was transferred to the J-3, Operations Directorate, Joint Staff, Washington, DC. Upon completion of Joint duty in May 2007, he was assigned duties as the Assistant Chief of Staff, G3, Operations Division, Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

In July 2008, General Yoo assumed command of the 4th Marine Regiment, 3d Marine Division and Camp Schwab, Okinawa, Japan. He deployed in support of OEF as the Commander, Regional Corps Advisory Command Central (RCAC-C) 3-7, 201st Corps, Afghan National Army (ANA) from July 2009 to April 2010. After redeploying from Afghanistan, he relinquished command of 4th Marines and Camp Schwab in June 2010. General Yoo then served as the Commandant of the Marine Corps’ Military Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) in New York City.

In June 2011, he transferred to San Diego, California and assumed command of Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego and the Western Recruiting Region.

His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal with Gold Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Achievement Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon. He is a Marine Combatant Diver, a Military Freefall Parachutist, and a graduate of the U.S. Army Ranger School.
